We need to ensure the Living Donor Protection Act (S. 377/H.R. 1255) is passed by Congress and living organ donors are protected from insurance discrimination.
Approximately a third of all kidney transplants are from living kidney donors, but in a study by Johns Hopkins University, a quarter of their living organ donors who tried to initiate or change life insurance were rejected or offered higher premiums based on their status as an organ donor. This should not be happening!
Already, 17 states have enacted this legislation and several more are expected to join them this year. This is because of the outstanding advocacy done by the kidney community. Let’s continue this by telling Congress that we need them to also take action to protect ALL living organ donors across the country!
