Support Two Illinois Bills to Protect Living Organ Donors
Please take a moment as you write your legislators to personalize your email to them. It makes a huge difference when you add your story! Thank you!
April is Donate Life Month. Living organ donors offer kidney patients the gift of life, and we need to protect donors against unexpected harm in return for that gift. The state legislature in Illinois is considering its own Living Donor Protection Act (HB2847) and the Living Donation Tax Credit (SB68).
HB2847 would ensure that life, long-term care, and disability insurers will not discriminate against living organ donors through policy conditions, acceptance, or pricing based solely on the person’s status as a living organ donor. It also provides certain employees up to 30 days of unpaid leave for living organ donation. SB68 would benefit employers who offer to help their employees who decide to become living donors by providing employers a tax credit for paid leave for up to 30 days.
Organ donors often face many barriers to donation, including potential unreimbursed expenses as high as several thousand dollars and discrimination in obtaining certain types of insurance. These barriers can prevent these individuals from donating or cause them harm they cannot absorb. We need to help guarantee that they won’t face discrimination and that their jobs will still be there after they recover from their surgery.
Please write your state legislators, and ask them to support these bills and individuals who act to save the lives of others. Help us to help our amazing living donors!
